MY HOUSE, KOTTAYAM

PROJECT COMPLETION: 2016 | LOCATION: KOTTAYAM

Seeking a new design around the old basics, an Architectural structure nearly 40years old was revisited keeping the plan intact. The house sits on a 12-cents plot covering a major portion of the site and hence the design was intended to make the house look artistic and sleek while bringing in nature and natural light to its interiors.

As the plan remains simple, each space was meticulously conceived down to the last detail. The spatial flow of the house was influenced by natural light and an open plan. An ochre colour theme was provided all around from the Jaisalmer flooring to the fabric on the furniture, accentuated through neutral shades of grey and dull green. On the ground floor, the space flows seamlessly between the living, family living, dining and the kitchen. The light court integrated into a modern design vocabulary brings in the essential green into the colour scheme which is an exciting mix of yellow and grey. The colour wash on the wall of the court with creepers falling down from the ceiling, adds a character to the dining area.

The spatial arrangement on the upper level accommodates the family’s private areas namely the master bedroom, the library and a family living that extends to a landscaped court on the terrace. The façade was transformed with elements that follow the same colour scheme as the interiors. The overall design is richly layered and textured with a thoughtful mixture of materials, which extends into the choice of furniture, furnishings and artwork that brings in a feeling of warmth to the insides.

Another creative touch added as per the client’s desire to celebrate and honour the life and works of a renowned publisher to the coming generations, were the mixed media presentations placed around the house, which included an intelligent mix of old photographs and memoirs of achievements of this personality. From the thoughtful representations of the old town of Kottayam to the movie stars who graced the screen in the 70s, this house is a celebration of memories of relationships, both old and new, all of which bring an old-world charm to the interiors. The project was also an opportunity to reinforce our expertise in renovations.
